Micropternus brachyurus, commonly known as Rufous woodpecker or Belatuk biji nangka (Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012) in Malay is a species of birds belongs to the Picidae (Woodpeckers) family. This woodpecker has a medium-sized body measuring about 25 cm in length (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993). It also has a short black bill and rufous plumages with black bar on its upperparts. Males are differ from females by red patch under its eyes. They produce a sharp and rapid descending voice ‘kwee-kwee-kwee-kwee’. In Peninsular Malaysia, the Rufous woodpecker can be found in lowland rainforest up to 1,050 m above sea level (Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012). It feeds mainly on ants. It is found in Southeast Asia. It is short-billed, foraging in pairs on small insects, particularly ants and termites, in scrub, evergreen , and deciduous forests and is noted for building its nest within the carton nests of arboreal ants in the genus Crematogaster.
