The Ceyx rufidorsa is a bird species in the Alcedinidae family. It is commonly known as the rufous-backed kingfisher. This species is found in Brunei, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand in tropical lowland forests near lakeshores and streamsides. The rufous-backed kingfisher is a small bird usually in solitary and hunts from a low perch over the water by diving for insects including mantises (Mantodea), grasshoppers (Orthoptera), flies (Diptera), water beetles (Dytiscidae), winged ants (Formicidae) and frogs. It is sometimes considered as a subspecies of the Oriental dwarf kingfisher (Ceyx erithaca). Hello everyone! Took advantage of the long weekend to hunt for the Rufous-backed kingfisher (RBKF) at the usual spot in Hulu Langat area, accompanied by 3 friends. The RBKF started to perched between 10:45am until about noon, and I managed to capture most of the shots of this tiny beauty. RBKF is my personal favourite, purely because of the vibrant fiery colours, when illuminated by the late morning sun while perching. Happy viewing! I was blessed to have managed to photograph the elusive Stork-billed kingfisher this morning here in Serdang. It was indeed a very beautiful bird from its contrasting colours and, at one point, the bird perched about 30 feet away, which gave me plenty of opportunities to shoot the bird. I end up filling up 2 x SONY 64GB Tough SD cards! These images were shot using SONY a7RIV with the SEL200600G lens and SEL14TC teleconverter, triggered with SONY RM-VPR1 Remote Commander. Pelargopsis capensis commonly known as Stork-billed Kingfisher is a species of bird that lives in a variety of well-wooded habitats near lakes, rivers or coasts. It also can be found near mangroves, agricultural land near the sea including rice fields and coconut plantations. It has been listed as least Concern by IUCN Red List (2016). The Stork-billed Kingfisher has green upperparts, blue wings and tail, and a brown head (Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012). Its underparts and neck are buffs. It has a coral-red bill with a black tip and bright red legs. The characteristics of male and female are similar, although the female's bill may be noticeably heavier than her mate's. This species hunts frogs, crabs, rodents and young birds but they are predominantly fish-eaters. Therefore, they have a very large bill that makes a formidable weapon for dealing with crabs and fishes.Sony RM-VPR1 #FullFrameLife #MySONYLife #sony #sonymalaysia #a7RIV #SEL200600G #SEL14TC #alpha #NurIsmailPhotography #madebyluminar #skylum #skylummalaysia #luminar #topazlabs #urbanbirding
A chunky bird with a very broad bill, Cymbirhynchus macrorhynchos is commonly known as Black-and-red broadbill. This species is monotypic within the genus Cymbirhynchus. Its plumages are covered with black upperparts, red rump and deep red underparts crossed by a black breast band and long white streak down the scapulars. The bill is bright blue at the top mandible and yellow below. The juvenile has a similar appearance as the adult but has dull reddish-buff underparts. The Black-and-red broadbills’ natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical mangrove forests. It inhabits wooded regions close to the rivers, streams or flooded areas in south-east Asia. Other than molluscs, water snakes and small crabs, C. macrorhynchos feeds on small invertebrates, primarily insects like grasshoppers, beetles and ants. However, it also occasionally eats some fruits, seeds or other plant matter. Halcyon coromanda or the ruddy kingfisher is a bird species belonging to the Alcedinidae family. This species has a very large, bright red bill and equally red legs. The body is rust red with white plumage at the rump generally deepening to purple at the tail. The male birds are brighter in plumage than the female. Like other kingfishers, ruddy kingfishers generally feeds on fish, crustaceans, and large insects, though in areas with less running water, they are known to take frogs and other amphibians. This kingfisher is listed as Least Concern under the IUCN Red List (BirdLife International 2016).
These images were shot with my SONY a7RIV. It is my favourite bird to photograph and I was thankful that it appeared on the first day of my outing in Johor Bahru. Thank you for viewing. Location: Johor Bahru. Name: Mangrove pitta Scientific: Pitta megarhyncha Malay: Berlau Bakau / Pacat Bakau Family: Pittidae Pitta megarhyncha is a mangrove pitta belonging to the Pittidae family. It can grow up to 20cm. It looks similar to the blue-winged Pitta but lacks the buff lateral coronal stripe. Besides, P. megarhyncha has a longer and heavier bill (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993). Its breast is orange-rufous and the belly is duller in colour. The mangrove pitta can be found from Myammar through the Malay Peninsula to Sumatra and the Riau Archipelago. This species is a mangrove specialist. Due to loss and degradation of mangroves, the populations are declining. During low tides, it will hop along the muddy mangrove floor to feed on crabs and other crustaceans. It will nest on the mounds of mud lobsters. Name: Common kingfisher Scientific: Alcedo atthis Malay: Burung Raja Udang / Pekaka Cit-cit Kecil Family: Alcedinidae This is a second trip to Johor Bahru in a span of 1 month and thankfully, I've managed to get some good detail shots of the Common kingfisher, better than my shots last month. Due to good available light, I used my SONY a7RIV with the SEL200600G lens and SEL14TC teleconverter. Alcedo atthis is commonly known as Common Kingfisher. It belongs to family Alcedinidae. This species is the smallest of open country kingfishers that are familiar throughout Europe and Asia. It can be found in water’s edge in open-country swamps, old mining pools, aquaculture ponds, and mangroves. As for this species, both male and female are almost identical except for an orange colouration with a black tip on the lower part of the female’s bill. The colour of their wings and upperparts is blue-green, while the rump and tail are bright blue. It also has bright orange underparts with a small, white bib underneath their bill, on the throats (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993). The common kingfisher feeds mainly on fish and invertebrates and will fly rapidly, low over the water, and hunt for the fish from riverside perches, occasionally hovering above the water's surfaces. #FullFrameLife #MySONYLife #sony #sonymalaysia #a7RIV #SEL200600G #SEL14TC #alpha #NurIsmailPhotography #madebyluminar #skylum #skylummalaysia #luminar #topazlabs #urbanbirding

Name: Oriental darter Scientific: Anhinga melanogaster Malay: Pependang Timur Family: Anhingidae Today was a lucky day for me. After 8 attempts, I've managed to photograph the elusive Oriental darter here in UPM Serdang. It perched for about a minute before flying off. The Oriental darter or Indian darter is a water bird of tropical South Asia and Southeast Asia. It has a long and slender neck with a straight, pointed bill and, like the cormorant, it hunts for fish while its body is submerged in water. This bird is listed as Near Threatened in the IUCN Red List (BirdLife International, 2016). These images were shot with my SONY a9 with SEL200600G and SEL14TC. Today, I had the pleasure of sharing some of my knowledge and experiences during my photography trips. There were 10 participants who attended the workshop, which was held at SONY Store, The Curve Mutiara Damansara.
The first session was the sharing of some of my favourite images from my travels to date, the most recent being my trip to Iceland and Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park in East Java. The second session was mainly sharing the a7RIV, a7RIII & a7III camera settings. The participants were also shown the tips & techniques in Pixel Shift Multi-Shoot as well as Interval Shooting for timelapse. The workshop finished at 4:45pm with a group photo. Thank you SONY Malaysia for the venue and thank you to all participants who made it there. Till next time, stay tuned for the next workshop! Name: Jambu fruit dove (male) Scientific: Ramphiculus jambu Malay: Punai Jambu Family: Columbidae The Jambu Fruit Dove is a plump dove with a small head and a small yellow or orange beak. It measures around 27 cm in length (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993). Scientifically known as Ramphiculus jambu, the Jambu Fruit Dove eats fruits directly from the tree or from the ground if the fruits have been dropped by hornbills or monkeys. This species occurs in the Malay Peninsula, Borneo and Sumatra where it can be found in the primary and secondary forest from lowlands to low hills up to 1,100m. Both sexes have an orange-yellow bill, red legs and pale ring around the eyes. Its feathers are downy soft and very colourful. The colour of male is saved from garishness by marvellous pink-flushed ivory breast; dark green above, carmine on head, ivory white below with pink centre to its breast. While the female is duller dark green all over but with a dull carmine face, pale abdomen and buff beneath its tail. Here are male, male juvenile and female Jambu fruit dove: #sony #sonymalaysia #a9 #a7RIV #SEL200600G #alpha #NurIsmailPhotography #madebyluminar #skylum #skylummalaysia #luminar #topazlabs #urbanbirding
