Irena puella or Asian Fairy-bluebird is an arboreal species, always active amongst vegetation. This species can be found in the lowland and hill forest up to 1,400 m in the upper and middle storey. The Asian Fairy-bluebirds are frugivores with figs being their favourite fruit and they also like to consume flower nectars as well. As young birds, they are fed insects by their parents.

The male of Asian Fairy-bluebirds is covered by the blue and black plumage. On its upperparts, central crown and nape, back, rump, upper tail-coverts and narrow wing-bar are brilliant blue. It’s flight feathers and rectrices are black. Although the plumage may appear fairly dull in the shade, when the sun lights up the male’s back, the sapphire-blue feathers are very conspicuous. The female has a plain dark turquoise-blue with dark flight feathers which are different from the male. Both male and female have a black strong bill and legs while the eyes are bright red.

Common green magpie (Cissa chinensis)

25/12/2020

Common Green Magpie or Gagak Gunong (Cissa chinensis) is a member of the crow family (Corvidae). Gagak Gunong’s primarily green plumage is an unusual colour amongst corvids. This species has a bright emerald green upperparts and slightly paler green underparts, reddish-brown wings, a thick black stripe extending from the bill, through its dark eyes and all the way to its nape and a very long white-tipped tail. Its eye rims, bill and legs are bright red. Compared to other species from the same genus Cissa, C. chinensis has a recognisable longer tail and distinct tertial pattern and green underparts.

Frequent exposure to the sun can cause the Gagak Gunong’s green feathers fade to turquoise-blue because yellow carotenoids or bio-pigments, the source of its green plumage colouration is destroyed by the light or due to the lack of carotenoids in their diet. The blue plumage is also caused by the feather structure’s refracting light properties known as schemochromes.

This species is primarily carnivorous and consume a wide variety of invertebrates especially beetles and grasshoppers, small reptiles and mammals, young birds and eggs. Gagak Gunong can be found in bamboo forests, scrubs and lowland evergreen forests.

I've managed to photograph the Common green magpie feasting on the Thai-peninsula pit-viper in Fraser's Hill.

Birding Trip to Pantai Jeram

17/12/2020

Today I had the opportunity to photograph some waders / shore birds at Pantai Jeram near Kuala Selangor, about 1-hour drive from Kuala Lumpur. I was accompanied by my son, together with my friends Tokki and Faizal.  This is also the first time I used the "kualipod", a custom made ground pod to achieve low angle shots for the waders.
