The tiger shrike or thick-billed shrike (Lanius tigrinus) is a small passerine bird which belongs to the genus Lanius in the shrike family, Laniidae. It is found in wooded habitats across eastern Asia. It is a shy, often solitary bird which is less conspicuous than most other shrikes. Like other shrikes it is predatory, feeding on small animals. Its nest is built in a tree and three to six eggs are laid.

It derives its name from the tiger-like pattern of its upperparts which are reddish-brown with dark bars. Adult males have white underparts and a grey head with a black mask. Females and young birds are duller and browner and young birds lack the grey and black on the head [Wikipedia].
Name: Tiger shrike

Family: Laniidae

The violet cuckoo (Chrysococcyx xanthorhynchus) is a species of cuckoo in the family Cuculidae.

The males have glossy violet feathers on the head and upper parts of the body. The blackish tail has a white tip, and barred outer feathers. The most spectacular feature is the brightly iridescent violet chin and upper breast. The belly is white with broad black, green or violet bars. Mature males also have a red eye-ring. The closely related species, C. amethystinus has a glossy blue-violet throat patch rather than reddish violet of this cuckoo.

The females have mottled, greenish-bronze upper parts and a dark brown crown. There are white markings around the eyes and sometimes on the forehead. The central tail feathers are greenish while the outer feathers are rufous with greenish bars. The outer rectrices are barred black and white. The breast is whitish with bronze-green bars and variably washed rufous markings.

Juveniles have barred rufous and greenish bronze feathers on the upper parts of the body, a bright rufous crown, rufous and mottled green or brown wings, a barred brown and rufous tail and brown-barred white under parts.

The violet cuckoo is found from north-eastern India to Southeast Asia, Greater Sundas, Palawan and the Philippines. Southern populations are resident, while northern populations in locations such as Assam and Bangladesh appear to be migratory. [Source: Wikipedia]

Amur paradise flycatcher (Lifer #315)

26/9/2021

The Amur paradise flycatcher (Terpsiphone incei) is a bird species in the family Monarchidae. It is native to China, Manchuria and Primorsky Krai in the Russian Far East. It is a winter migrant to Southeast Asia. Until 2015, it was considered as a subspecies of the Asian paradise flycatcher. [Source: Wikipedia]

For female and first-winter/sub-adult birds, deeper maroon-chestnut upperparts and tail, black hood (crown, face and throat) contrast markedly with the greyish upperbreast. The tail of adult males can extend up to 27 cm or more. Adult males of the three paradise flycatcher species (Amur, Blyth’s and Indian) occur as a white as well as a brown morph. However, white birds with nearly all white plumage and glossy black head could not be conclusively identified as either Amur or Blyth’s Paradise Flycatcher. [Source: Singapore Birds Project]
Name: Amur paradise flycatcher (female)
Scientific: Terpsiphone incei
Malay: Murai Gading Utara
Family: Monarchidae
IUCN Red List (v3.1, 2016): Least concern

The small and active bird, Prinia flaviventris is called as Yellow-bellied Prinia or Perenjak Kuning in Malay. It can be distinguished from the species of the same genus, Prinia rufescens by the yellowish colour on its belly and under the tail coverts. This species is common in all kind of open country, near the coast as well as far inland at low elevations. It can also be found in tall grass, roadside scrub and on agriculture but rare in the mountains (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993).

Both males and females of the Yellow-bellied Prinia have similar characteristics. It has olive-green upperparts, slaty grey head, sometimes with a whitish eyebrow, cream breast grading into its bright yellow abdomen and under tail coverts underparts. It also has a narrow long-tail fringed with black and white (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993). The tailorbird has the same appearance as the Yellow-bellied Prinia, but they can be distinguished by the Yellow-bellied Prinia's grey head. [Source: MyBIS]

Little cormorant (Lifer #309)

18/9/2021

The little cormorant (Microcarbo niger) is a member of the cormorant family of seabirds. Slightly smaller than the Indian cormorant it lacks a peaked head and has a shorter beak. It is widely distributed across the Indian Subcontinent and extends east to Java, where it is sometimes called the Javanese cormorant. It forages singly or sometimes in loose groups in lowland freshwater bodies, including small ponds, large lakes, streams and sometimes coastal estuaries. Like other cormorants, it is often found perched on a waterside rock with its wings spread out after coming out of the water. The entire body is black in the breeding season but the plumage is brownish, and the throat has a small whitish patch in the non-breeding season. These birds breed gregariously in trees, often joining other waterbirds at heronries.

The little cormorant is about 50 centimetres (20 in) long.  The little cormorant is found across India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan and lowland Nepal. It is also found in parts of Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Indonesia. It is not found in the Himalayas, but vagrants have been seen in Ladakh. It inhabits wetlands, ranging from small village ponds to large lakes, and sometimes tidal estuaries. Little cormorants tend to forage mainly in small loose groups and are often seen foraging alone. They swim underwater to capture their prey, mainly fish.  [Source: Wikipedia]

EPF Building in Ipoh

I have finally managed to revisit my very first project when I was working with an architectural firm last time, the EPF Building in Greentown, Ipoh.  I don't have the details for the building anymore since it was more than 25 years ago. Whenever I'm in Ipoh, I would make it a point to visit this building.
