After several arrangement with SONY Malaysia, the first birding workshop with SONY a1, the new flagship mirrorless camera from SONY, was held successfully in Kuala Selangor on 30 March 2021. There were five participants who were specially invited for this event, which was jointly organized with Studio Zaloon Alpha Proshop. SONY Malaysia was kind enough to have the SONY a1 and SONY a9 camera on loan, including the SONY FE 600mm F/4.0 GM OSS, SONY FE 400 F2.8 GM OSS as well as the SONY FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS lenses for the participants to try out. All of us gathered at D Tours Kuala Selangor at 3:00pm for the briefing on the workshop and registering for the loan units. By 3:30pm, the participants were taken by boat to three locations for a 90-minute eagle feeding bird-in-flight (BIF) sessions. We were greeted by flocks of Brahminy kites and Whiskered terns at the feeding locations. Everybody had good chance to try out the loan units of the SONY mirrorless cameras as well as the lenses. Thankfully, we were blessed with such a good weather till the end of the workshop. I would like to share here some of the images taken with the SONY a9 with SONY FE 200-600 F5.6-6.3 lens, with and without the SONY FE 1.4x Teleconverter. The birding workshop finished at 5:00pm where the participants were treated to a sumptuous seafood dinner at Aroma Ikan Bakar at Jalan Pantai Jeram, hosted by Mr. Chin Yok Fee of Studio Zaloon. We all adjourned by 7:30pm.
Stay tuned for more SONY a1 try & test sessions coming soon! The blue-winged pitta is a passerine bird in the family Pittidae and Southeast Asia. I am really glad to have photographed all the malkohas of Malaysia, during the span of two years of birding. The list of the malkohas is as follows:
Commonly known Raffle’s Malkoha or cenok kera in Malay (Jamaludin et al., 2007), this bird is the smallest malkoha among the five species recorded in Peninsular Malaysia with measurement around 33 cm in length (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993). The males have chestnut brown crown, nape and mantle as well as lighter chestnut at the underparts of its body. In contrast the male appearance, the female species have grey crown and nape including the sides of the head, throat and breast. The underparts are light buff with chestnut brown mantle. Both sexes have bluish orbital skin and green bill. This species is endemic to Sundaland including Peninsular Malaysia and commonly inhabits the primary and secondary lowland rainforest. Raffle’s Malkoha is frequently resides on the forest canopy but will sometimes descend to the middle storey. [Source: MyBIS]. Alcedo meninting or Blue-ear Kingfisher is a small bird that resembles the Common Kingfisher but has a much deeper blue plumage and blue ear coverts. It can be found in lowland forest up to 900 m above sea level. The main habitat requirements for kingfishers are food and nest site availability. They usually perch on branches overhanging densely shaded streams before diving below to capture prey that includes crustaceans, dragonfly larvae and fish. The adult female for Blue-ear Kingfisher is similar to the male but tend to have more rufous orange on the sides of the head and have a red lower mandible. Still, the brilliant iridescent blue line down back to its rump is best seen in flight.
