Kuala Lumpur City Skyline from Sunway Putra Mall

28/2/2018

KUALA LUMPUR - The weather was great today and I just had to continue shooting sunset from this location, after shooting sunrise the day before.  This viewpoint is from Level 8 of Sunway Putra Mall parking.  It is quite safe to shoot from there as the security guards kept on patrolling the car park every now and then.  Shooting space, however, is limited due to existence of a huge banner covering the face of the building.  As a consolation, one can place his table top or mini tripod on the 1-foot wide balcony.

This image was shot with my SONY A7RIII with the SEL1635GM lens.  I've also used the NiSi CPL + RayMaster ND8 Zero filters to extend the shutter speed to 30 sec for the light trail.  The main challenge for this image, however, is the overpowering bright lights from The FACE Suites, even with 9-exposure bracketing.

Here are some HDR studies (together with the EXIF) from different time of the day, the last image is a single-exposure image. Please click on the image for full high resolution view on my Flickr page. Thank you!
Picture
EXIF: 16mm, f/8, ISO 400, HDR 9-exposures (for based image). For the light trail, it's f/16, 30 sec, ISO 100, single exposure image.  Moment: Blue hour sunset.

Picture
EXIF: 16mm, f/8, ISO 400, HDR 9-exposures (for based image). For the light trail, it's f/16, 30 sec, ISO 100, single exposure image.  Moment: Night.

Sunrise at Masjid Putra (Putra Mosque), Putrajaya

Today marks another milestone in my photography journey...none other than in the form of SONY A7RIII. Traded-in my old A7RII for it. So, this morning, I took it for a spin in Putrajaya.  Luckily, the sunrise moment was beautiful. Here is what captured with the A7RIII + SEL1635GM lens.  Still learning to use the camera. Good day!

Federal Territory Mosque, Kuala Lumpur.

Today, I've got an opportunity to perform my Fajr prayer at the Federal Territory Mosque (Malay: Masjid Wilayah Persekutuan) in Kuala Lumpur. It is located near MATRADE complex and the Federal Government Complex off Jalan Duta.

The Kuala Lumpur Mosque was constructed between 1998 and 2000. It is situated on a five hectare site near the Government Office Complex along Jalan Duta. The Wilayah Persekutuan (Federal Territory) Mosque was opened to the public on 25 October 2000 and was officiated by the 12th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin ibni Almarhum Syed Putra Jamalulail. It is the 44th mosque built by the Government within the city limits. The mosque can accommodate 17,000 worshippers at any one time.

The mosque's design is a blend of Ottoman and Malay architectural styles, heavily influenced by the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, Turkey. It has 22 domes made from a composite material of glass fibre fabric mixed with epoxy resin to make it durable and light.

All these images were captured with my SONY A7RII with the SEL1224G lens. I was extremely happy with the handheld quality of the interior shots, thanks to the 5-axis stabilization in the A7RII camera body.

Alhamdulillah, another great sunrise moment in Kuala Lumpur and, this time around, it was taken from Bukit Tunku, near the RTM Office on Changkat Tunku in Kuala Lumpur.  All these images were taken with my SONY A7RII and SEL24105G lens, with the NiSi CPL + NiSi GND .9 Soft filters used.

EXIF: 34mm, f/8, ISO 400, HDR 9-exposures. I was lucky to capture fully lighted up Petronas Twin Towers. Normally, the lights go off at midnight.

Experience with Luminar 2018, by Skylum Software

9/2/2018

I have purchased the Luminar 2018 software from Skylum Software late last year for USD69 as an alternative to Adoba Photoshop CC 2018.  It's available on both the Windows as well as MacOSX platforms.  The editing flow is much simpler and faster, but you will a need some time to familiarize with the interface and commands. Luminar 2018 can be used as a stand-alone software as well as plugins to both Adobe Photoshop CC 2018 and Lightroom Classic CC 2018.  For more information of Luminar 2018, please visit their website or click on the link HERE.

Below are two images which were processed in Luminar 2018 with it's presets, the second image with the sunray filter applied.

Saw this moth resting on an heliconia leaf in my garden. So, quickly I took my SONY A7RII with the SEL24105G lens to shoot the insect.  For the lighting, I used Nissin i40 compact flash, set at manual with 1/1 strength.  The camera was set at 105mm, f/16, 1/250 sec, ISO 100, handheld.

Manfrotto Pro Light Camera Backpack RedBee-210

1/2/2018

0 Comments

Hi!  Everyone of us photographers will always be looking for the best camera backpack that will meet all the requirements during travelling as well as everyday use.  I've had quite a few camera backpacks in the past, among others Mindshift Gear Backlight 26L, SONY LCSBP2, SONY LCSBP3, FStop Gear Loka UL (Ultralight), Thinktank Streetwalker Harddrive, Lowepro Fastpack 250 & 350, to name a few...all of which I have sold off to in the search for my perfect and most ideal camera backpack.

The backpack I'm referring to is Manfrotto Pro Light Camera Backpack RedBee-210 for DSLR/Camcorder (Model No.: MB PL-BP-R). Overall outside dimension is 50.8cm x 34.0cm x 24.9cm and the bag weighs relatively light at 1.6kg. inclusive of the adjustable padding.

Generally, I've come to love this bag due to the following reasons:
  1. The side access to the bag is what I really love most. This means that I can swing the bag to the side (whichever side you need) to take out your camera, without taking off the backpack.  This also acts  as a safety feature where your backpack is always with you;
  2. The bag is spacious where I can carry my SONY A7RII with SEL1635GM attached, SEL70200G, SEL1224G, SEL24105G, SONY A6000 with SEL1018 attached, Genie Mini, Mindshift Gear Filter Hive, Think Tank Photo DSLR Battery Holder 4, raincover, 15" notebook computer compartment, iPad Pro 9.7" compartment, and media card wallet, all within the allowable cabin size baggage requirements;
  3. The main access to the camera compartment can only be opened on the side that rests on your back i.e. reverse access.  This means that nobody can open the zipper to steal your gears;
  4. There is also a safety netting covering the main compartment of the camera bag;
  5. The padded top handle, and the comfortable, padded and adjustable shoulder straps;
  6. Rain Protector is included fold out protector which when installed creates a barrier between the wet outside and dry inside of your bag.
  7. Cushioned back panel for comfort and to help wick-away moisture. The bag also has a water repellent feature where a specially applied coating to the fabric which keeps resistant to moisture; and
  8. The attractive black with red trimmings and inside padding, gives it an exclusive look.

The only thing that I don't like about the bag is the waist strap is thin and not padded.  I would love if the bag comes with the padded waist strap like the one on Mindshift Gear Backlight or the F-Stop Loka Ultralight.

This Manfrotto Pro Light Camera Backpack RedBee-210 retails for RM800, although, if you look around, you can get the same bag for a lot less. Just make sure you buy the bag from a reliable retailer.
