Hemicircus concretus is a small crested and short-tailed woodpecker measuring around 13 cm long and is normally known as the grey-and-buff woodpecker. It has black upperparts with pale yellowish scale and white rump. Its head and underparts are greyish, while the bill is dark grey. To differentiate between both sexes, the male woodpecker has a diagnostic red crown. This species occurs from Myanmar to Malay Peninsula and the Greater Sundas and is locally common in lowlands and hilly primary and secondary forests and plantations. Usually, the grey-and-buff woodpecker gleans for insects in pairs.
