A fairly small cuckoo measuring about 21-23 centimetres in length, Cacomantis merulinus is a species of bird belonging to family Cuculidae. This species is commonly known as the plaintive cuckoo. It inhabits forest edges, open woodlands, scrubs, grasslands, farmlands, parks and gardens. The plaintiff cuckoo mostly feeds on insects such as beetles, bugs, termites and numerous soft-bodies species. It may take some fruits too. The male has grey–brown upper plumage, orange below plumage, pale grey head, throat and upper breast, dark greyish brown mantle and wings, white-tipped tail feathers, orange-yellowish legs and feet, red eyes and yellowish bill below and black above. While the female mostly resembles the male; but often occurs in a "hepatic" morph with a reddish-brown upper plumage with dark bars. Its plumages below are paler with fainter barring. It also has a light stripe over its eyes and the tail is barred along the entire length. The juvenile looks like the hepatic female but is duller and has dark streaks instead of bars on the crown and throat. As numerous cuckoos, the plaintive cuckoo is a brood parasite. It favours laying its eggs in the closed nests with a narrow entrance, built by small passerines such as ioras, prinias, cisticolas and tailorbirds. The eggs are similar to those of the host species but are larger. The Oriental White-eye is a small-sized bird measuring about 11 cm in length. It has dark yellowish-green upperparts, yellow throat and breast with faint yellow stripe extending down the centre of the light grey belly. Its white eye-ring is surrounded by black. This bird can be found in the mangrove forest, coastal scrub and Casuarina trees. It also comes into gardens and plantations near the coast. It usually seen in small flocks (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993). [Source: MyBIS] I made a short overnight trip to Kuala Selangor on 28 March 2021 for family time. Had the opportunity to track the Kuala Selangor Nature Park with my wife & son. At the beginning of the trekking, I came across this Oriental white-eye feeding on the flowering tree. The bird was just about 25ft away then. It is widely common across southern China to the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo, Philippines, Java and Australia. The nest of this species is built hanging off the ground often in trees, small bushes even in open areas like eaves of the building and telephone wires (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993; Phillipps, 2014). With measurements around 11 cm long, the male can easily be recognized by the dark iridescent blue on its face, throat and breast as well as yellow belly and undertail coverts. It also has dark olive upperparts and yellow to orange pectoral tufts usually hidden under the wings. The female species has a similar appearance as the male but lacks dark iridescent blue parts (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993; Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012). Among the birds photographed were the Tiger shrike (Lifer #307), Purple-naped sunbird (record shot), Everett's white-eye, Scaly-breasted bulbul, Red-eyed bulbul, Stripe-throated bulbul, Asian glossy starling, Pin-striped tit-babbler, Common flameback woodpecker, Lineated barbet, Gold-whiskered barbet. The normal port for the Crimson-breasted flowerpecker and Orange-bellied flowerpecker was damaged by a fallen tree.
After a long hiatus due to the movement restriction due to the pandemic, I managed to get some time to revisit the Blue-eared kingfisher at the usual spot in Hulu Kelang. This time around, I've managed to photograph a female kingfisher. The male blue-eared kingfisher as well as the winter migrant Common kingfisher were not in sight. Managed to photograph the dark-necked tailorbird there as well. It is found from the Indian subcontinent to southeast Asia. The black-crested bulbul is generally about 19 cm in length. As the name suggests, the head of this bulbul is black while the rest of its body is different shades of yellow. Both the male and female are similar in plumage. One can make out a younger bird by its slightly duller coloring. It builds its nest in a bush; two to four eggs is a typical clutch. The black-crested bulbul feeds on fruit and insects. The tiger shrike or thick-billed shrike (Lanius tigrinus) is a small passerine bird which belongs to the genus Lanius in the shrike family, Laniidae. It is found in wooded habitats across eastern Asia. It is a shy, often solitary bird which is less conspicuous than most other shrikes. Like other shrikes it is predatory, feeding on small animals. Its nest is built in a tree and three to six eggs are laid. It derives its name from the tiger-like pattern of its upperparts which are reddish-brown with dark bars. Adult males have white underparts and a grey head with a black mask. Females and young birds are duller and browner and young birds lack the grey and black on the head [Wikipedia].
